We made it to California!
I’m sitting in a Cafe in Santa Monica, trying to get Dropbox to sync.
I really should have brought along our hotspot, but I forgot to pack it. I’ve got a couple projects I need to get to clients, so here I sit. I was hoping our United flight would have had Wifi, but no such luck. The place Tamika and I are staying at is supposed to have Wifi, but I wasn’t able to get it hooked up, unfortunately.
The trip went really smoothly. We got up early at Tamika’s grandparent’s house, and her grandmother drove us to the train station in North Wales. We said goodbye to the kids, and took the SEPTA down to 30th St. Station. From there, we got on the Amtrak to Newark, had some lunch, and then flew to LA.
The flight was pretty long, around 7 hours, but though they didn’t have Wifi, they did have inflight movies in the headrest, so Tamika and I watched Elysium (****), After Earth (***) and then I watched Europa Report (***1/2) on my own. Elysium was pretty good. I’m not quite certain why it didn’t get better ratings. I felt bad for After Earth, though. Jaiden Smith isn’t a very good actor at all, unfortunately, and though the directing and special effects were on point, the storyline was just kinda weak. Tamika and I wondered how many other movies with weak storylines are just carried by better actors.
Once we got to LAX, we went to pick up our car from the rental company. However, when we went to load our stuff into it, the car smelled heavily of spoiled milk. I had gotten a really low daily rate, and I wondered if they had given us a beat up car because of that. The did make it right, though, and let us exchange for a VW Passat for no extra charge.
We stopped at an Indian Cuisine restaurant for dinner. It was really nice to spend the whole day talking and traveling with Tamika.
We finally got the the place we had reserved through AirBNB. It seems to be a collective artists house, very hippy. Reminds me a lot of the McGill Subarctic Research Station and the Catholic Worker House in Harrisburg. They have a “pod” outside. Sort of a cross between a shed, a tent, a mushroom… it’s hard to describe! I’ll take a picture of it tomorrow. It’s small, but has two levels with a loft bed up above. I left Tamika to get some sleep while I finish up uploading these files. I’m TIRED! It’s nearly 3AM our time… I hope this stuff finishes uploading soon…
